Studio DUNN

Founded in 2010 by Asher Rodriquez-Dunn, Studio DUNN is a lighting design studio based in New England that develops and builds distinctive fixtures for residential and commercial applications. The studio draws inspiration its study Midcentury Modernism and Minimalism, and synthesizes that with a fascination with nature to lend an element of the organic into the designs through form, texture, or material. The studio prides itself on their use of traditional craftsmanship along side contemporary manufacturing techniques to hand assemble each piece in their Rhode Island studio. DUNN’s eye-catching designs offer a thoughtful reexamination of the way we experience light.

My role at Studio Dunn was as Operations Manager (2015-2020), where I led a small production team and managed product development with principal designer Asher Rodriquez-Dunn. Working closely with the production team put me in a unique place to optimize new and existing designs to fit within our in house capabilities and our local network of vendors and fabricators. We developed designs that were scalable, well-made, and timeless.

Sorenthia Collection Expansion

The success of the modular Sorenthia Light gave way to opportunities to expand the lighting collection using existing components and expanding to new, multi-purpose, reconfigurable designs, including new pendants and chandeliers, and wall-mounted sconces. In direct response to client feedback, we also developed “Thia”, a scaled-down version on the Sorenthia Light. This modular system also allowed us to develop dozens of bespoke chandelier configurations for clients across the globe.

Cumberland + Flute Sconce

My work on the Cumberland collection involved redesigning the glass shade, and retooling for better quality and more consistent production results. This redesign not only optimized the shade, color, and consistency of the glass, but improved our ability to work with it on our in-house production line.

The Flute Sconce presented the challenge of incorporating articulating elements into a minimal wall sconce design. We were able to devise a system that was secure, UL compliant, and unobtrusive to the overall design.

Linden Table Lamp

During my time with Studio Dunn we introduced table lamps to the studio’s repertoire, starting with the Linden Table Lamp. The striking design is composed of two custom lamp shades, and custom turned wood and spun brass components. Complex in its construction, the design is deceptively simple in its formal appearance.

Beacon Table Lamp

Simple forms require close attention to details. The design includes a turned lamp body, brass metal components, and a high quality linen shade. Every Beacon Table Lamp requires a careful selection of lumber, and hours of work by hand to turn and finish this elegant lamp.
